Empowering Adults and Family Figures through Collaborative DIY and Digital Skills
What happens when practical creativity meets digital learning within family life?
What if parents and children could strengthen their relationships while learning together through hands-on activities, repair skills, and responsible technology use?
These are the ideas at the heart of the European project DIY Parents, an initiative that promotes active parenting through collaborative DIY experiences and digital learning.
The project was created in response to two growing challenges faced by modern families:
- the gradual loss of practical everyday skills and
- the increasing dependence on digital technologies in children’s lives.
DIY Parents aims to help parents rediscover the value of creativity, repair, and hands-on problem-solving, while also strengthening their confidence in guiding children through the digital world in a healthy and balanced way.
At its core, DIY Parents combines practical DIY activities with digital literacy and environmental awareness. Through workshops, collaborative learning experiences, and community-based activities, parents and children will have the opportunity to create, repair, build, and learn together. From simple home repairs and creative upcycling to digital-assisted activities and sustainable practices, the project encourages families to reconnect through meaningful shared experiences.
One of the key outcomes of the project will be the development of a comprehensive DIY Parents Handbook, featuring practical exercises, educational guidelines, and digital resources designed for both educators and families. In parallel, local “DIY Parents Clubs” will create safe and inclusive community spaces where families can participate in hands-on workshops and collaborative learning activities together.
The project brings together organisations from across Europe with expertise in adult education, family support, digital learning, and community engagement. By combining different experiences and perspectives, the partnership aims to create innovative educational approaches that strengthen families, encourage lifelong learning, and foster stronger local communities.
Ultimately, DIY Parents is about more than DIY skills or digital education. It is about empowering families to learn together, create together, and build healthier, more connected relationships through practical, meaningful, and sustainable experiences.
