In today’s world, learning foreign languages is truly essential. However, traditional language education methods might present some challenges to children with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. That is, because children with learning difficulties might require a more personalised approach compared to typically developing children, when traditional teaching methods often rely on rote learning, memorization and fast-paced curricula.
Through inclusive education we would be able to bridge these gaps, ensuring that every child regardless of their abilities, has access to quality learning experiences. The FOCUS project is trying to identify innovative ways to make language education accessible to everyone and help children reach their full potential.
An important domain explored in the FOCUS project, is the appropriate use of technology in language learning methods. Recent and multiple technological advancements, help in creating and implementing apps and tools that are designed to make it easier for children with learning difficulties to learn and make progress.
Here follow some examples:
- Language Learning Apps
Applications like Duolingo and Lingokids incorporate gamification to make learning fun and engaging. Features such as audio-visual aids, repetition, and immediate feedback help children learn at their own pace. Many apps also allow for customization, tailoring lessons to individual needs.
- Assistive Technology
Assistive tools like text-to-speech (TTS) software can support children who struggle with reading or writing. These tools allow students to focus on comprehension and expression rather than being hindered by their difficulties with specific tasks. These tools provide alternative ways for students to engage with content and demonstrate their understanding.
- Language Learning Games
Through the use of digital games children can learn actively and incorporate interactive elements in their learning (e.g., puzzles, storytelling) in order to stay engaged while developing their language skilils. The gamified structure of these tools, which includes rewards, levels of increasing difficulty and challenges, can motivate children. This method makes progress tangible and exciting while it can also boost the children’s confidence.
- Digital Databases – FOCUS Project
The main aim of the FOCUS project is to enhance language education for children aged 6-12 with learning difficulties. A big part of this initiative is a Digital Database, a platform designed to collect and share:
- Case Studies: Real-life scenarios where technology and modern teaching practices have supported children in learning foreign languages.
- Best Practices: Methods and tools that educators can implement in their classrooms, as seen and utilized in different European countries.
The database will be available in multiple languages, making it a valuable resource for educators in Europe and worldwide!
