Virtual Reality in healthcare education

Virtual Reality as a Practice-Based Tool for Healthcare Education

Virtual Reality in healthcare education is rapidly transforming how social and healthcare training is designed and delivered. As digital technologies evolve, new opportunities are emerging to create immersive, practice-based learning environments. The VRCARE project explores how VR can be integrated as a complementary methodology in healthcare education, with a particular focus on childcare and elderly care settings.

Supporting experiential learning in care environments

Traditional training approaches in social and healthcare education often struggle to fully address complex aspects of care practice, such as ethical decision-making, meaningful interaction, sensory awareness, and emotional responses. These elements are difficult to teach through theory alone. VRCARE responds to this challenge by introducing practice-based, immersive learning experiences that allow participants to observe, reflect, and respond within carefully designed virtual environments.

Through VR scenarios grounded in real-life care contexts, learners can explore situations commonly encountered in childcare and elderly care. This approach supports experiential learning while offering a safe space for reflection, discussion, and professional growth.

A resource for professionals, educators, and students

VRCARE is designed to be relevant for healthcare professionals, educators and university professors, and students in healthcare-related fields. The project does not aim to replace existing pedagogical methods but rather to complement traditional training approaches, supporting the connection between theoretical knowledge and everyday professional practice.

By integrating VR into educational and professional development contexts, VRCARE contributes to continuous learning and skills development across different stages of healthcare education.

Advancing innovation in everyday care practice

The overarching goal of VRCARE is to support the improvement of social and healthcare services through innovative, inclusive, and reflective learning methodologies. By focusing on interaction, ethics, stimulation, and sensory training, the project demonstrates how digital tools can be meaningfully applied within real care environments.

As the project progresses, VRCARE continues to explore the potential of Virtual Reality to enhance healthcare education and everyday care practice. Professionals, educators, and students who are interested in learning more about the project or following its development are welcome to get in touch.
